The estuary is where the Ashley River / Rakahuri meets Pegasus Bay at Waikuku Beach, about 25 km north of Christchurch.

It’s a tidal coastal estuary with extensive salt-marsh vegetation and intertidal mudflats fed by several waterways.

The area includes parts of Ashley Rakahuri Regional Park, managed by Environment Canterbury.
